Greenhouse route

Lenght: 22 Kilometres.

Difficulty:  None. You can do it comfortably even if you have hardly ever ridden a bicycle.

Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Recommendations:

You should try not to go in the middle of the days as it is much hotter. Even though most of the route is along quiet paths or tarmacked roads, you must watch out for vehicles and move in line.

Description of the route:

From Los Alcázares you will go in direction of La Manga. After a petrol station, on the left you will see the fire station. Opposite there is a path leading to El Rame tower, which you just follow. After the tower turn right along a path that goes between melon and spicy pepper crops until you reach an artesian well. Turn right again and continue until you find the tarmacked road from Los Alcázares to Torre Pacheco.

Follow it for one kilometre towards this village until you reach the bar La Torre and a large white building. Then turn right and continue for two and a half kilometres, going straight, and ignore the crossroads you will find. Enjoy the sight of a vast extension of greenhouses, fields, round irrigation rafts (very common in the Mar Menor) and fields of fruit. You will end up in an area with denser traffic: take a right until you arrive in Roda and then keep going left until Dolores.

Then go right until you get to San Javier. If you are in a hurry to get back you can follow the N-332 road, which leads you straight to Los Alcázares, but it is slightly uncomfortable because of the denser traffic. It is better to cross San Javier towards San Pedro del Pinatar until you reach the football grounds. There you will find a tarmacked road to the right that takes you to La Calavera city centre, which is the oldest in the area, and then go to the San Blas hermitage, which was built on an ancestral home of the 13th century dedicated to San Juan de la Calavera. From San Blas you will see a large avenue that you must take towards the right, and which will take you to the road from San Javier to La Ribera.

Turn right again until you reach some traffic lights and then go left to enter an estate in construction. At the end of it you will see a piece of land called El Recuerdo, a large property surrounded by tall and thick pine trees. Go around its left side, straight on, and after passing another two plots of land you will get to the road to the airport. On your right you will soon find Los Narejos and Los Alcázares, at the end of the route.

Interesting places:

– El Rame tower: a defensive construction dating back to the 16th century. It was a part of a surveillance system to avoid attacks from the Berber pirates, who devastated the area for centuries.

– Roda property: a perfect example of an ancient piece of agricultural land in the Mar Menor, with an ancestral house, a patio and installations to keep the agricultural devices. Greenhouses. Thanks to the rise in temperature produced by the sun inside an enclosed area one can collect several harvests a year and even grow species that are sensitive to the cold and frost

La Sierra Minera

This circuit, starting and finishing in Los Belones, allows us the bay of Portman – one ofthe most beautiful and secluded from the coast of Murcia and the famous Sierra Minerade La Unión.

Duration: Three hours.

Length: 24 miles maximum height.

Difficulty: Easy. The only incidents are two small hills to be overcome, first to enter the bay of Portman (100 meters) and then to cross the Sierra Minera (240 meters).

Route description:
0.0 – The Belones. Upon entering the village, facing the sports bar, take the Avenue de La Fuente crosses the highway above.
1.1 – Cross. Nucleus of the barracks. On reaching the transformer turn right on an asphalt road which passes between some houses.
1.3 – The asphalt gives way to the ground. It pedals parallel to a coastline. We leave a tip.
1.7 – Crossroads with a pole electrical conduction. Turn right to cross the wadi.
2.6 – Finca del Puntal. Riding school. We follow the paved road to the left, a tower and a large irrigation pond.
2.8 – Crossroads. Continue along the dirt road out front.
3.2 – Cross, arrived at the asphalt road to Los Belones Portman. Continue to the left.
6.3 – Crossroads. Right out the track that leads to El Llano. Continue straight on the asphalt to save a little hill and start down the bay.
8.5 – Crossroads. Turn left towards the lighthouse.
10.1 – Lighthouse and beach. From this point you can fully appreciate the tremendous ecological mess spills caused Peñarroya miners at bay, completely flooded by debris. The beach is now almost a mile from its original place. The bollards from the old port of Portman are just grotesque caricatures inland. Return along the same path that we brought.
11.7 – Crossroads. Turn right, heading to Los Belones.
13.7 – Collado (100 meters).
13.8 – We left the road and we left the track.
16.3 – Collado (240 meters). From this point you have an unbeatable view of Mar Menor, the hill of the tortured Carmolí and Sierra de La Union, pierced by dint of sweat and tragedy since time immemorial.
17.8 – Turn right towards El Llano del Beal.
18.1 – Llano del Beal. The town is crossed straight, always down.
18.8 – After passing under the bridge of the railway narrow track leads to the road from La Union Los Nietos. Turn right.
21.5 – Crossing the highway from La Manga del Mar Menor. We took the right route service to Los Belones.
24.0 – The Belones. End of the road.

Recommendations: Avoid the hottest hours and move with caution in areas of asphalt. In the Sierra mining, avoid getting close to the wells.

RURAL TOURISM

Lorca offers to you countless possibilities to enjoy a varying rural tourism and of great quality, due to the contrasts which constitute its wide territory of 1.675 km2:

  • High Territorios of Lorca or‘Tierras Altas de Lorca’. It comprises all the deputations or municipalities situated in the north of Lorca. It is a rural and pure space with small villages and farmhouses with calm and peaceful air, old traditions and an unique architectural and gastronomic inheritance. It is a cattled farming and agricultural area.
  • The Orchard of Lorca or ‘Valle del Guadalentín.. At the foot of the town we find ‘the orchard of Lorca’, on the smoothness of Guadalentín river which take part of an orchard of vegetables, greeneries and fruit tress.
  • The seashore of Calnegre. Our eight kilometres of fragmented litoral are exceptional in the Mediterranean area. Its deliveration from the urban development have converted the beaches and coves of Lorca into a virgin and ideal place. We can find there a municipal tourist youth hostel.

The municipal territory enlarges from the north to the south along 100 kilometres and offers an amazing and varied landscape of peaks of the mountainous systems from the interior to the sea; of barren and rustic High Earth, where cereals and grapevine between very small rural communities are cultivated, to the warm and refreshing coves and beaches of Calnegre, happening through the valley of the Guadalentín and its fertile orchard of fruit trees and vegetables; without forgetting natural places great biological and landscaping wealth like the mountain ranges of Gigante-Culebrina, Pedro Ponce, Pericay, the Almenara, Carrascoy, Torrecilla and Tercia, with a great variety of fauna and flora, as well as the surroundings of marshes of Puentes and Valdeinfierno and the rivers Vélez and Luchena with its respective humedales.

The artistic inheritance preserved in Lorca deputations and their customs and manners will make you be surprised. The great number of archaeological sites show us that these lands were inhabited from some distant past, and so we find ‘el Cerro de las Viñas’, ‘Almendricos’, ‘La Salud’, ‘Cerro Negro’, ‘El Villar’ or ‘Torrecilla’. It is important to mention the remains of Culture of Argar. A wide variety of architectural style determines the churches and rural hermitages sparsed through the territory. In Coy, Santa Teresa, La Hoya, El Pradico, El Consejero, Villarreal, Santa Gertrudis or Los Navarros pilgrimaces or tradicional festival take place together with ancient dances and popular music. In the same way, we find remains of old medieval castles such as Xiquena, Tirieza, Felí, Puentes or Amír which pointed to the christian-nazarian frontier. All these historical remains are the evidence of a life pointed to the search of water.

The gastronomy of these lands makes greater the products that are offered to you and satisfy the most exigent palates. Related to the typical handicrafts, we have to mention the great variety of products such as ‘jarapas’ or bespreads made of wool from Coy, pottery, esparto, furnitures or sweets which will go with you to your town.

There are different enterprises dedicated to adventure sports, spare and leisure time, which will allow you to discover the Nature in an active way.
