Caravaca de la Cruz, artesan market 15th May

Caravaca de la Cruz, this months artesan fair is dedicated to honey

This weekend Caravaca de la Cruz hosts its monthly Mercadillo del Peregrino in the atmospheric setting of Plaza del Arco, at the entrance to the old quarter.

For visitors who are new to Caravaca, walking through this arch is like stepping back in time, walking from the sprawling , modern world which clusters around the foot of the outcrop on which the old quarter sits, to the historic quarter, a different world inside the arch which leads to the historic Plaza and the city of the Cross of Caravaca.

Now that the Jubilee Year has closed, the city has returned to its normal serenity, although this is still a busy day for visitors, enjoying the artesan stalls which sell a full range of artesan products ranging from food to cosmetics, jewellery and bits and bobs for the house.

This month is dedicated to childrens entertainment and there are lots of workshops and activities for children to enjoy, including donkey rides.

If you´re planning to have lunch in Caravaca and want to try real murcian cooking, a lot of the restaurants are offering what´s called a plato tipico , a typical dish of the city. Ask in the tourist office at the end of the plaza and they´ll be happy to direct you to the restaurants offering the dish of the month.

If you´ve not been to Caravaca before, read the information we´ve prepared about parking. It will make a visit to the city so much more enjoyable! (By Region of Murcia News – 12/05/2011)
